The most dangerous hiking path in Span; Caminito Del Rey had claimed a few lives in the past. This hiking path was deemed to be dangerous that the government decided to close the place for public. Finally the place was re-opened after undergoing extensive renovation and reconstruction of the bridge, the boardwalk, and safety cable. While the most dangerous hiking path in Spain: Caminito Del Rey is no longer as dangerous as it was before reconstruction, it is also not a walk in the park. Due to quality of terrain, it requires a certain level of physical effort and skillfulness. As the highest point of the path stand at 105 meters or around 345 feet, you can’t be afraid of height if you want to hike here. So, are you ready to hike on the most dangerous hiking path in Spain: Caminito Del Rey?
If you are ready to make an attempt. First we have to cover on how to get here. The most dangerous hiking path in Spain: Caminito Del Rey is located near Ardales, it can be reach by road or by train from Malaga. The closest train station is El Chorro train station and from there you can take a bus to the entrance of Caminito del rey. After you buy a ticket and wait for your turn, you will be given a hard hat to wear during hiking. The purpose is to protect your head from any small falling rocks. Then you will start your hike by walking through to the cave. There is no light inside the cave so bring the flashlight, a headlamp or use the flashlight app on your phone.
The entire path is about 7.7 km or about 4.8 miles long. Depend on how fast you hike, expect to spend 3 to 4 hours. Is it worth it to spend time hiking on Caminitio Del Rey? Absolutely. If you are an outdoor enthusiast, a serious hiker or a thrill seeker, then hiking on the most dangerous hiking path in Spain: Caminito Del Rey is a must. Especially if you happen to be visiting South Spain or Andalucia region. The view on this hiking path is beyond stunning especially if you have a strong affinity toward rocky landscape. This unique hiking path consists of cave, dirt trail, boardwalk, glass walkaway and pedestrian suspension bridge.
The narrow boardwalk is built around the cliff edge. As you as you hike on it, you can see the beautiful river and rocks below you. You can also spot a waterfall at the beginning of the hiking path right after the cave. If you are not afraid of high, this should not be a problem. There are so many look out point along the hiking path. One of them is the glass walkaway. You can stand on it and see amazing view through the glass below you.
Although you don’t need to be an athlete to hike, you need to be in shape due to quality of terrain. The boardwalk is narrow and constructed on different levels. You have to walk up and down. So have a strong knee. Keep in mind that the pedestrian suspension bridge will swing left and right as you walk on it to cross from one side to another side of the cliff.
All in all, this is one of the most beautiful hiking path I have ever hiked. It’s strenuous hike but it’s worth every minutes of it. Go there early in the morning to avoid the crowd and if you have time, stop in Ardales for lunch. Try Bar El Mellizo Ardales for their amazing tapas. It is located in Plaza San Isidro. After that long hike you totally deserve a delicious meal.
