Explore the Blue Mountain for a quick experience of Australian wild life and some thrilling rides. Blue Mountain is located two hours away from Sidney. Our first stop is Wentworth falls, we walked thru the rain forest to see the beautiful view. The following stop was Featherdale wild life. I purposely skipped the Sidney zoo because what I had in mind was a close interaction with animals which Featherdale wild life in Blue Mountain has to offer without paying extra fee for a close encounter.
Here, everyone can pet and feed the kangaroo and you can also pet the koala. Childhood dream come true! You can also pet a wombat if you dare. I suggest you should not try it since there’s a big sign by the wombat open air cage saying “I might look cute but I bite”. You can also see Tasmanian devils, crocodiles, dingo, and of course ton of kangaroos walking side by side next to you. If you ever wonder where the kangaroo name came from, here is a story behind the name according to a guide; back in the days, when European explorers roam the Australia and saw these strange hopping animals, they asked the native Australian people, the Aboriginal inhabitants, what these creature were called. They replied “Can-ga-roo” which in their language meant something along the lines of “I don’t understand your question or I don’t know”. But of course European explorers didn’t understand it, thus the hopping animals were called kangaroo since then.
Blue Mountain is listed under UNESCO world heritage due to its outstanding biological value and exceptional biodiversity value. The geology of the region that include cliffs, slot canyon, waterfall and the famous Three Sisters sandstone rock formation. You can catch a beautiful view of the Three Sisters sandstone rock formation from echo point. If you have seen humongous rocky landscape such as Grand Canyon, more likely this rock formation will not impress you but it is still worth checking. From the lookout point of three sister rock formation, you can walk to a visitor center. The visitor center offers food, restroom, souvenir store and an art gallery filled with aboriginal paintings. I was so mesmerized by those pantings and lost in time. By the time I realized, the bus tour had left me stranded at the visitor center. I was about to order the cab or hitchhiked to the scenic world, Katoomba. Lucky me, the driver returned to pick me up.
Scenic world Katoomba is a tourist attraction in Blue Mountain that provide ultimate blue mountain adventure. Here you can expect to ride the steepest passenger railway in the world at 52 degrees incline or if you are a dare-devil, you can adjust your seat to 64 degrees incline called the scenic railway. Believe me the thrill that you get from this ride worth a try.
From here you can walk on the scenic walkway which link the scenic railway and the bottom station of scenic cable way. Along this elevated walkway made of wood, you can discover the tranquility of ancient rain forest. You can walk for 10 minutes or walk all the way like me for about 2.4 kilometers to the bottom station of scenic cable way.
The cable way is a unique way of viewing the Three Sisters, Orphan Rock, Mt. Solitary and Katoomba Falls. The cable way ride offers you a panoramic views of Jamison valley. Descending into Jamison valley along 545 meters cable with capacity for 84 passengers make this cable way as the steepest and the largest aerial cable car in the southern hemisphere.
The Blue Mountain trip was ended as we all learn how to throw a boomerang. After all, what’s trip to Australia without an aboriginal experience.
