What’s the trip to Iceland without a stop at the famous Blue lagoon? On the day of arrival after 5 hours nonstop flight from east coast across Atlantic Ocean, I treated myself for some pampering at the Blue Lagoon. Blue Lagoon is located between the airport in Keflavik and the city of Reykjavik, so it makes the perfect sense to stop there on the way to/from airport.
You can take a cab to blue lagoon but I prearranged my airport transfer to blue lagoon and from blue lagoon to the hotel. Arrived in the morning, feeling tired over the red eye flight, I couldn’t wait to float in the lagoon. I checked my luggage at the luggage storage located by the Blue Lagoon parking lot and then went straight to the entrance door.
The facility of blue lagoon is huge, it includes the cafeteria and the lava restaurant. Lava restaurant offers the best view of blue Lagoon while you are sipping your drink or having a meal. Blue Lagoon offers different packages, from the basic package which only include admission, to the deluxe package which include towel, robe, drink, algae mask and souvenir to take home. I was on the pampering mission, so I booked the deluxe package. The day was cold but the milky blue lagoon surrounding by the lava rocks was so inviting. Since I was bursting with excitement, I ran from the door and jumped into the Blue lagoon, hoping the hot water would warm me up. The experience was quite soothing and unreal. Then I started Icelandic beauty ritual by applying the mud mask on my face. The mud in the buckets are there for anyone who want to try it. You can take it as much as you want, it’s free. You can apply it to your face, your neck and some people even apply them to their feet. Next, I was off to the bar which located in the middle of lagoon to grab the algae mask and some fresh juice. The bar offers alcoholic drink and fresh juices. Sitting in the hot water with the fresh algae mask on my face and fresh ginger drink in my hand made a complete relaxation. If that’s not enough, you can always book the massage in the water. Yes, the blue lagoon offers it too.
Based on my experience, here are tips for having a great time in the blue lagoon: book it ahead of time to make sure you will not have to wait at the entrance, visit blue lagoon in the morning or late afternoon to avoid the crowd, splurge a little bit by booking the deluxe package so you can adorn the robe after you jump into the pool, try the mud and algae mask, and sip the fresh juice while floating around. Wash your hair and put a lot of hair conditioner. Leave the conditioner on your hair, don’t rinse it. The blue lagoon water contains silica which known can be rough on the hair so make sure to do this before you jump into the lagoon. Believe me, you’ll regret it if you don’t. Unless you love looking like Bart Simpson with spiky stiff hair. The last tip, make sure to go to the rooftop of lava restaurant to get 360 degrees view of the blue lagoon. Make your trip the blue lagoon worthwhile. Happy relaxation!
